The history of San Fulgencio began in the 18th Century, when the bishop of Cartagena, launched his project to drain ancient flat-lands near the coast, transforming them into fertile soil suitable for agricultural use.
Consequently, the Town has strong economic and development links with farming, this being the main productivity in the entire Vega Baja del Segura region, contributing some 15% to the GDP (gross domestic product) of Alicante province.
Between 1985 and 2008, San Fulgencio experienced strong and constant growth with the boom in the construction of second homes for vacation and residential use. In outlying areas, this boom has returned.
The 2022 mix of population saw an equal split in three between Spanish citizens, British and then other foreign nationalities.
GASTRONOMY
One of the most important San Fulgencio dishes is “Cocido con Pelotas”, an elaborate dish of vegetables, eggs and meats, a local recipe with great tradition that lasts to this day.
Rice dishes are also typical and varied, usually cooked over firewood, such as Rice with Crust, very typical throughout the Province.
Also its classic sweets and desserts such as Dulces de Boniato con Mistela in the month of January or Las Torrijas de Semana Santa are worthy of mention.
The town’s annual Tapas Festival in September has gained a reputation for being one of the best frequented-in the area, bringing in thousands of tapas fans to enjoy the best that San Fulgencio can offer.
