San Javier sits right on the shore of the amazing Mar Menor lagoon.
Originally, it was a bay opening into the Mediterranean; at either end, volcanic reefs gradually held back the sand and sediment that was dragged along by the sea currents to form a sandy column of dunes and rock vegetation and long beaches in contact with two seas.
La Manga strip can be seen from the beach, separating the Mediterranean from the lagoon.
It now consists of five islands and, having shallow and protected waters, lending itself to being an international water-based sports hub.
There are sailing and water-skiing schools that run courses, as well as windsurfing, canoeing and catamarans. Nearby is La Manga Stadium, known for hosting numerous football clubs from all over the world during the winter months.
In 1994 the Mar Menor was included on the Ramsar Convention list for the conservation and sustainable utilisation of wetlands. It is also part of a Specially Protected Area of Mediterranean Importance and is a Special Protection Area (ZEPA in Spanish) for bird life.
In 2022, Spanish lawmakers granted extra protection rights, making it the first case of an ecosystem protected by rights of nature in Europe. The Mar Menor is now legally represented by a group of citizens, scientists and officials.
